The Submarine Cable Asia Network (SCAN) was initiated by the privately-owned Telemedia Pacific Inc who recognized the need for a direct, secure, high-capacity communications link between the burgeoning markets of Jakarta and China/Hong Kong to facilitate the flow of financial, Governmental, commercial, educational, and entertainment information between these two important centers without the need to pass through intermediate countries or intermediate carriers.
SCAN is the first major component of the Telemedia Pacific Cable Network (TPCN), which will link important commercial centres throughout the Asia/Pacific region.
